Bleed prettily for me my dears
Oct. 26th, 2007 12:57 pmSo I've gone and seen 30 Days of Night. It's, uh, very pretty. If you like that kind of thing, which I do. Really, I'm not going to go on about the inaccuracies (though they did get "borough" right - hee). Or a rant about Alaska as symbol and hey we exist as a reality not just as a tool for your stories and - well, it would be a long rant. I'm going to skip the rant because I'm a big believer in the story being what matters, and everything else existing to serve the story. There are many movies and such that I love that aren't historically or otherwise accurate and I don't care. It's not that I don't think writers shouldn't make the effort, I'm saying that the story is the trump. I'm not going to go on and on about what was wrong with the details here in this story and possibly spoil someone else's appreciation of it. But. I basically walked into this movie with my suspension of disbelief blown and I wasn't ever going to get it back. I tried, but once that switch gets thrown I was done for, and noticing not just the inaccuracy in details but failures of logic. I was occasionally able to go, "That was a nifty shot" or "Well, that was done nicely" but what I should have been able to do was just go, "Oooh!" and parse out later that, "That was a nice shot" or "Well, that was done nicely". I think somewhere in there was actually a reasonably good movie, but I wasn't allowed to see it.
Then I came home and watched my Netflix copy of Death Proof which was in fact kind of awesome. If you like that kind of thing. Which I do.
