You really have to feel for poor Rory, whose first guess upon waking somewhere strange is that they're dead.

I really appreciated that though the plot may have been about a terrified child, the story was kind of really about how terrifying it is to be a parent. And as much as I'm able to, I thought it did a good job of that.

Shortly after "The Eleventh Hour", [personal profile] fan_eunice posed the question about whether the Doctor having a small child as a companion would be workable or not. I was one of the few people who didn't think it would be a good idea, but I've changed my mind since then. At the time I think my opinion was largely colored by Ten, who I still think would not have done well by a small child, and I also had a negative reaction to the whole bit in "The Eleventh Hour" when he was trying to figure out his food craving. I thought the whole spitting out food and throwing plates was rude and unkind to his small hostess. I do realize that most children would cheer at what was basically an adult telling them it was OK to not eat something you didn't like, but my initial reaction didn't get that filter applied.

I've softened considerably towards Eleven since then (to put it mildly), but what really did the trick as far as kids are concerned was watching Matt Smith's audience participation piece in "Doctor Who at the Proms", with the small boy and the bomb and the invisible string the boy was able to see just fine. At that moment I decided that Eleven should be around small children as much as was possible (and that Matt Smith is probably going to make an awesome father some day). Seriously - cutest. thing. ever.

I happened to watch this one with a friend whose son has had to be hospitalized twice because he was hearing voices that told him to kill people. He's on medication and most of the time he does fine--he was wonderful this weekend--but she was crying by the end of it. I hope she can use this ep to reassure him that even when he has to go to the hospital, she'll always be there for him when he comes out.
