Fangs for the memories

I have seen the new Fright Night and I approve.
I had a couple of reasons I thought I was going to like this ahead of time and David Tennant wasn't even one of them (though he was pretty good in the movie). The first reason was Anton Yelchin, who I have had high expectations of ever since Charlie Bartlett. The second reason was that they went for the 'R' rating, which is practically a daring thing to do these days.
It doesn't hurt that the original had a fairly solid framework, and the remake took advantage of that. I didn't realize until the closing credits that Marti Noxon wrote the remake's screenplay, which made it all the more sad that there wasn't a single Buffy reference in the entire movie ("Scooby gang" doesn't count). Really the biggest changes were Peter Vincent's profession (which worked quite well) and the elimination of Jerry's roommate (totally killing off one of the slashiest movie bits ever). Toni Colette and Imogen Poot didn't suck either. They also added something to the final fight that I don't want to spoil that I totally loved. I did get kind of nostalgic for the old Evil, but mostly I felt that the remake did a great job with the original's framework while getting to eliminate the 80's cheese of the original (this is also why I consider almost every cover of a Police song to be preferable to the original, and I LOVE The Police). So overall, I count it a success.
Also, I noticed the second time that the teacher was taking attendance that one of the students was named "Edward Lee", so now I have to know if there were any other horror writers on the roll or if that was a coincidence.
