I've come to the conclusion that public discourse, especially but not limited to political discourse, is becoming more and more like an abusive relationship. And I want out. Once you've thrown your plate at me or the wall that pretty much releases me from any obligation to respect or even listen to why you didn't like your dinner. No, really. That doesn't make it OK for me to throw the pan in response either. It's not acceptable behavior and we need to stop accepting it.

STOP.

I don't know why I'm still surprised and disappointed that adults can't act like adults in public discourse. Somehow I got the idea that *dignity* was valued. Sigh.

We can't seem to talk politics in this country (and from what I can see online not just in this country but mostly) without being hostile and vitriolic. If you're not seeing much of that, great.

That is. Not nice.

I have heard of events were discussion got out of hand both in Germany and in the Netherlands, but in my personal experience, everything has always been reasonably reasonable.

*snuggles you* What passes for political discourse in this country right now either makes me angry or makes me want to cry, depending. Gyah. (Denise not wanting Michaela to see Obama's address to the schools, and the school district-which is the one I went to-deciding not to show it falls under the "makes me want to cry," side.)

Pep rally for common sense, anyone?
