But you're OK with girls watching science fiction TV shows, right?

OK, I know Primeval is just fluff, but that didn't keep me from actually shrieking aloud when Abby said, "Girls don't talk comics."

Uh yes, quite a few of them do. Some of them are pretty cute, too.

More importantly: hey, Hodges and Haines, HOW COULD YOU HAVE ABBY SAY THAT?! How many comic-reading young girls did you just make feel a smidgen more insecure about being themselves by that comment? You idiots.

Even more importantly: that's hardly even a real question. Wolverine, of course.

Oh, and about that reveal concerning Stephen and Helen: I called that weeks ago, but the truth is part of me thought it was the fan goggles.

okay, haven't seen the show- is it the one scifi channel is showing commericals for?, but *damn* I've faced that "girls don't buy comics" myself many times back in the day when I still bought them... even from comic book store employees.

Still though, dumbass thing for a character on a SCIFI show to say!

BBC America.

I didn't have access to comics shops when I was a kid or a teenager - I just got my comics at bookstores. But when I finally did discover them in my early twenties, my local one welcomed me with open arms.

There were several great comic book stores where I grew up who were just happy to take my money and chat with someone about storylines.

However, when I went to college? *headdesk* There was a HUGE comic book store a few blocks from campus, I walked over and picked up several comics after perusing awhile and then to the counter to pay for them. The guy just stared at me. I pulled some money out before I realized he hadn't even begun ringing them up (ah the days where you could buy a lot of comics and not spend more than $10....) Finally he said "you're buying comics?"

"Um yes" was my oh so intelligent reply

"But you're a girl." (Well, I was 18, but still)

"You're point..." I was honestly confused.

The guy stuttered and stared for a bit more before one of the other customers yelled out "For god sakes (whatever the clerks name was) quit staring at her boobs and ring her up!" The clerk turned bright red and started ringing up the comics and the customer realized what he said because he muttered to me "Sorry. I mean they're nice boobs, great boobs, I mean, hey, Daredevil- you read Daredevil?"

It was funny in a sad way. But we wound up having an interesting conversation about Matt Murdock (daredevil) as a result.

Thankfully I managed to avoid ever having an exchange like that, though I've certainly heard stories. Yours is pretty good, though. :D

It's too bad more women/girls don't read comics or get into various role playing D&D type role playing games. maybe the stereotypes could be broken then

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Gah, I think my eyes rolled *out* of my head, rolled across the room, and jumped up and thwacked the TV when Abby said that. Not only was it incorrect, it even seemed out of character. A stereotypical girly-girl might not have a flat full of pet lizards and work as a biologist, either. I would think Abby would at least be open to girls liking comic books, even if it wasn't her thing particularly.

that reveal concerning Stephen and Helen: I called that weeks ago, but the truth is part of me thought it was the fan goggles.

I think there was something specific somewhere in the middle of the season that made me think that, too - a reaction on Stephen's part, or some look Helen gave? Because I had the same idea in my head. I don't want to attribute too much subtlety to this show though. Heh.

This. *Clings to graphic novel collection*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking recently about how I could rearrange things in my apartment to get them away from potentially broken windows and rain coming in, and one of the first things I thought of was, "How well would bag covers protect my comics in a flood? Would I need to move my storage boxes on top of a table?" :)

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense to me! I have a little table for mine. Since they are pretty I don't just chuck them on the floor with the rest of the books that won't fit on my shelves :0)

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
My comics are in boxes, but most of my graphic novels are on the floor. I have one shelf with the graphic novels, but at least a good four shelves worth on the floor. My bookshelf situation has actually been pretty insane for a while now - almost all my shelves (the ones that can fit them) have books two deep on them, and I have just so many books in boxes and on the floor - insane.

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I have similar storage problems. I've tried to organize and make choices and move some books into storage, but that only goes so far! (And where am I going to put my action figures and give them room to play?) And then the comics keep increasing every month. I've got the older ones organized in hanging files inside cardboard storage boxes, but the only place left was on a utility shelf under my plants by a window, and I don't like their chances during a big storm!

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
In my last apartment one place I had put some shelves and also stacked books was underneath the breakfast bar. But the breakfast bar was on the other side of the kitchen sink, and because of clogged pipes elsewhere in my apartment building my sink had overflowed, and for some reason I didn't realize at first that some of it had gotten underneath the breakfast bar and had soaked the bottom books. By the time I discovered it they were heavily mildewed and the mildew had started to spread. I still haven't replaced all those books. *sniff*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
isn't that the way bookshelves are supposed to be?

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I dream of being able to own a home someday. I don't have kids to dream of a yard for them to play in or anything like that - I dream of having enough bookshelves, of having enough space to put bookshelves up.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure there is such a thing as "enough bookshelves"

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-09-15 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly not, but I'll continue to hope to achieve that someday, the way some people hope to achieve enlightenment. ;)

I wonder if, to the writers, Abby fits into that "lots of girls want to be veterinarians" pigeonhole.

There was a bit in this season's Bones premiere, when Hodgins says he thought women secretly liked it when men fought over them and Cam's response was, "'Women' is an unacceptable generalization". I kind of wanted to hug my TV when she said that.

It gets a little odd sometimes, sorting out intended subtext from fannish subtext, doesn't it?

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I know the pigeonhole you mean, I just wouldn't have thought herpetology would be part of it! You could be right, though. They needed a cute girl, they needed everyone to have some halfway plausible way to be related to dinosaurs, so the girl gets to be a vet.

Cam's response was, "'Women' is an unacceptable generalization".

I think I said, "Thank you!" out loud to my TV when she said that.

OT, but about TV, I just noticed the Life season premiere is up free on Amazon On Demand right now. (I don't know if it works, haven't tried it yet, but cool!)

Also, I dreamed I saw Damian Lewis on campus. o.0

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh WOW. I can't download it (stupid Amazon doesn't have Mac compatible video downloads yet), but I can watch it streaming. Yay! Thank you!

Did he talk at all in your dream, and if he did which accent did he use? :)

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I know you were worried about missing it because of your trip.

Hmm, that's a good question - I had the impression of him talking, and I knew he was British, but I don't remember his accent.

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
I actually still haven't had time to watch it, but that's OK because it's on my iPod! I didn't even have to tweak anything - iTunes is offering the ep for free as well. I figure if I don't have time to watch it on the plane I'll certainly have time to watch it on the train Friday.
